Mica Powder is so much fun to use… It produces soft, pastel color with a beautiful shimmer. It can be mixed with water on a craft mat and painted on paper, chipboard, canvas, or metal that has been primed first.
It can be mixed with water in a misting bottle and sprayed on, or sprayed through a stencil as I have done for my background.
It can be mixed in a small container with Art Basics Modeling Paste and again, applied through a stencil to create an even more textural surface as I’ve done here. I have also sprayed it on a stamp and stamped with it. It doesn’t give detail, but a beautiful, shimmery impression of the pattern. ~Gayle Price

I LOVE painting and blending colors. So using the Mica Powders on butterflies was extremely fun for me. You can blend them easily to create all kinds of colorful little pieces. Here I used them on die-cut papers, but you can use them on chipboard, wood, metal...the possibilities are endless!
I started with a plain Manila tag and some Distress Inks in purples and pinks. Drops of water spritzed on removed some of the color for contrast. Then I mixed Gold Mica Powder and 3D Gloss Gel to use with the Butterfly stencil. When dry, stamp with black archival ink using the Tea on Deck cling stamp. You can off-set the stencil and add shadows with inks and a foam square. I randomly added white gel pen accents with the Bubble stencil. White really makes the colors pop. Then I layered the tag onto black chipboard that acts as a frame.
I cut various Butterflies with the Thinlits- Winged Beauties die and some branches out of colored paper. Then I mixed Green, Purple, Lipstick, Pink and Teal in puddles of Soft Gloss Gel to make a thick paint. Only make one color at a time and paint in sections of the Butterflies and twigs as they dry rather quickly. To make the colors stand out, I used a permanent marker around the edges and for accents. Add a bow in the lower corner with some gorgeous Prima flowers and glue the Butterflies in place with 3D Mat Gel. This bright and cheery tag is ready to go. I hope you find inspiration here and give this technique a try. ~Linda Cain

Creating my small canvas, I was inspired by beautiful spring flowers - hyacinths. Especially the ones in pinks and purples.
I wanted to create some really varied textures so I used all sorts of mediums like: Heavy White Gesso, Modeling Paste, White Crackle Texture Paste and Soft Matte Gel. Gesso was especially important here - I used it to prime not only the canvas, but also the decorations - it made them ready to apply all the colors.
When all my mediums were dry, I could reach for Mica Powders in Pink, Purple, and Lipstick. I sprinkled my powders on the embellishments, using a small spoon, and then I sprayed them with water from a mini mister. This made the powders run and create gorgeous colorful stains.
I wanted to highlight certain elements so I took a soft brush (with just a little bit of water) and dipped it in the powders adding more layers on my embellishments and the canvas. I also took Gold Mica Powder to add some delicate accents. ~Monika Huculak

Here are my trophies collected from springtime nests, order: Finnabairum, species: Mica Powderis Officialis! ;)
Secondly, I rubbed them dry into crackles, which in turn had been obtained thanks to Texture Paste - White Crackle.
Finally, having mixed them with water, I made delicate splashes with the help of a hard brush and my thumb. You can easily control gleaming results by balancing the amounts of powders and media in a mixture. ~Olga Siedlecka
