Adding A Touch of Color

Trina shows how just ONE watercolor pencil can add so much amazing contrast to a project. Just look at this gorgeous tag filled with splendorous gold, new accents, and sprinkles of Finnabair art mediums. Want to know how to create it?

- Step 1: Grab a Prima tag and a scalloped palette knife; spread gold crackle paint over the tag.
- Step 2: Sprinkle on Prima glass beads, smooshing them into the thicker areas of paint.
- Step 3: Use a Prima stencil to create a subtle design in complementary colours.
- Step 4: Add more texture by adding in a few stamped images.
- Step 5: Choose a contrasting colour from your watercolour pencils and outline the edges of your stamped images colouring slightly inside the images.
- Step 6: Use a waterbrush to soften the pencil colour. You will get some colour on the water pen and you can use this to ‘paint’ other areas too.
- Step 7: Add in additional stamped images.
- Step 8: Add in some Prima embellishments to make the tag look complete.

Next up we have TWO amazing tutorials by Finnabair! She took our NEW watercolor pencils and used them in HER style, with her new releases to create beautiful projects. That's the beauty in Prima products...they are created for every learning stage, and for every papercrafting style!
Stamp Coloring with Prima Watercolor Pencils
As many of you know I'm not a big stamper and beautiful, precise coloring of stamps is totally not my thing. I simply don't have enough patience or skills to do that... but I can surely add a bit of color to my artsy-messy stamps, just playing with watercolor pencils and water brushes! The great advantage of projects like that is you are not aiming for perfection, and the results can often be surprising - so you can never get bored. This is a great technique to play on a tag, in the journal, or you can alter a simple paper bag - just like me. ~Finnabair

I started with stamping the image I wanted to use on my paper bag: I combined the vintage window with the image of the "artistic personality" from "
Now is The Right Time" stamp set. I was very happy with the final result - it reminded me the Art Nouveau posters by Alphonse Mucha. ;) I used permanent ink - I wanted to be sure it won't smudge when I'll be adding water! When the ink was dry I started to add my first colors with pencils, just like in a coloring book...
I continued coloring adding a bit more color also outside of the image. When I was happy with the result I started blending the colors with the larger
water brush.
I dried the image and added the finishing touches in the places which needed more color. I finally blended the details inside the image and added the colors on the face of the girl. I dried the project again and added some touches with white permanent pen: some rays of light, dots, and highlights.
This way I've got colored image with a bit "artistic" feeling in it - perfect decoration on a paper bag you can use to fill with some goodies to give as a gift to your artsy friend, I think! ~Finn
Altering Old Cabinet Cards
Another idea may be using Watercolor Pencils to alter the photos or old cabinet cards - they will be great focal points of your journal pages, tags, collages or frames.
Photos are usually printed on glossy paper so it is important to prime them before adding the color. I used Art Basics Clear Gesso to apply 2 thin coats on the top of my cabinet card. The surface turned absolutely matte and with delicate, great "tooth" - ready to apply paints, pencils or inks!
When the card was dry I started coloring it using a selection of colors - repeating the same colors on the person and the background. I also added a
stamped butterfly - to make the project more quirky! I used permanent ink and colored the butterfly the same way as the rest of the photo. Next I used the water brushes to blend the colors in a freestyle, a bit artistic way. That was really fun part! I started outside of the gentleman.
I continued blending on the top of the gentleman's image and when I was happy with the result I dried the card carefully. Next I used the same permanent ink to add some more stamping in the background. (I used a couple of my
cling stamps and a
clear stamp with messy hand writing.)
Finally I added touches with Glossy Accents and, when it was dry, I was able to use it on my small mixed-media collage.
When creating layers and background for my Cabinet Card I followed the color palette I used on the photo. You can't go wrong this way!
