We are excited to introduce you to a lady who frequently submitted to our Prima Gallery, entered many of our contests and simply loves Prima products!
Presenting Susan Lui!
1. When did you start scrapbooking and how did you get started? I've always enjoyed art and craft, dabbling in pottery, making mohair teddy bears amongst other arty pursuits. As a child I loved collecting all manner of stationery, pretty pens, letter paper, stickers, ribbons, etc. So a few years ago, when a couple of scrapbooking stores opened in Singapore, I was like a kid in a candy store. I was attracted by the gorgeous scrapping products, then I learned what I could do with them and I was hooked. I liked the idea of being able to preserve my memories and photos in a manner that appealed to the creative side of me. I started dabbling in scrapping and became more serious about it about two years ago.2.From where do you draw inspiration? Everywhere. I draw a little inspiration from the everyday things I see around me: a piece of fabric, an advertisement, magazines, a new scrapbooking medium or tool, and the creative genius of scrappers whose work I admire. I am also inspired by the photograph I intend to scrap, where and when it was taken, and the memory it evokes.
3. Describe your style for us. I have a fondness for shabby-chic designs. I love inking and distressing the edges of my patterned papers, giving them a faux weathered look. I have a weakness for flowers, lace, trims, pearls and crystals on my layouts, finding ways to incorporate them whenever I can. My layouts tend to be very detailed, with lots of layers and embellishments, and occasionally a surprise that has people wondering how I did that. I am an instinctive scrapper, having never taken any basic classes. Despite this, I am very particular about achieving balance in my layouts, making sure that all the elements are anchored, not floating. So even when I use a lot of embellishments, the layout doesn't appear cluttered. I also like playing with white space so the eyes have a place to rest and focus on the photograph.
4.How do you go about designing a page. My layouts start from one of two starting points: The photograph or the patterned paper. Oftentimes, I select my patterned paper, embellishments and alphas to match the photograph and, depending on the scene depicted in the photograph, I create my layout around that. Other times, I'm inspired by a patterned paper, especially those with intricate designs that I can hand-cut. I design a page in my mind, thinking of the best way to bring out the elements of the patterned paper, and enhance the basic design through layers of embellishments.
5. In general, how long does it take for you to do a page? I would say it takes me about one to two days to do a page. Sometimes, I like to leave my page overnight if I'm not sure if I like it. The next morning, I look at it again with fresh eyes and I'm able to tell what's missing or if certain elements look better placed elsewhere.
6.What is your favourite Prima product? I love everything Prima, but my favourite would have to be the flowers. I especially love the new flowers Prima has come up with in the last few collections. The luscious Baroque and Juliet blooms, the ever so versatile vines and cherry branches, the oh-so-pretty Camelot roses... I also love the huge Maxi Aster flowers which were released earlier, for their ability to liven up a page. Coming in a close second (and third) would have to be the crystal swirls and pearls, as well as the very pretty patterned papers.7. What are three products you can't live without. I would say patterned papers would be number one on my list. I love patterned papers which have flowers and patterns I can hand cut, layer and create new embellishments with. I prefer muted classic colours but have to admit, never knew I could have so much fun creating purple layouts with the new Indeed collection. Second on my list would have to be flowers. There is so much you can create with flowers on a page. A simple solitary one could add a spark of colour and interest; a lively cluster could brighten up a simple page. I have to say that all my pages have inked and distressed edges so inks would have to come in third, simply because they add that little (almost non-perceptible) extra to a layout. And what would a shabby-chic layout be without lace and trims. So I'm sneaking in lace and trims too.
8. What is/was one of your favorite scrapbook trends/fads? I'd say butterflies. I don't think the butterfly fad has ever really gone away. In fact, I only need to look at the new Prima collections to know that they're so in. They're featured prominently in the patterned papers, in the butterfly vines, as glittered stand-alones... I find that butterflies work really well with my feminine shabby-chic layouts. Just a couple of small ones hand-cut from patterned papers, or punched out, add that special little touch.
9. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us?
Ask anyone at the LSS in Singapore and they'll tell you that Prima is one
of my favourite brands, so being given the opportunity to guest design for
you is a dream come true. I had a great time the last week coming up with
all my layouts and altered project for this guest designer stint. In fact,
I had so much fun I didn't want to stop and almost missed my deadline. If
you'd like to see more of my layouts, please do visit my blog at: www.luv2scrap-pages.blogspot.
