Oil Pastel 411
But, first! Let's talk about our new Oil Pastels! How do you use them? Why buy Prima's Oil Pastels? How are they different from watercolors? We hope to answer all your questions right here and right now!
How do you use them? A million different ways!
- You can color directly on any media with them, then blend with your finger, a sponge, or a brush. Use dry or wet.
- Or scribble on a craft mat/glass block, and pick up the color with a waterbrush; then apply to media...like our Paintables!
- Try scribbling directly on a Prima stamp, mist with water, and stamp on your project for unique results.
- Apply a wet brush to the crayon tip, then apply to project.
- Cut a tad off and blend into gel or paste for beautifully colored results.
- Apply shavings with a palette knife to build layers in an art journal or on a canvas. Carve through with a sharp object to create a unique design.
- And SO MANY MORE WAYS! See Adrienne use them on her LWP show here, or catch our quick tip video below for even MORE tips!
There's really no right way, nor wrong way, to color with Oil Pastels, so give it all a go! You're going to LOVE the color-rich results you can achieve with these new crayons!
Why buy Prima's oil pastels? Our new Oil Pastels are high-quality, artist-grade, pigment-filled, vibrant and oh-so-easy to blend crayons...all neatly bundled into a cute storage box! They will last you for years! (Unless you're a mad-crafter and use them all day long! Even then they'll still last you a very long time.)
Why not just use watercolor pencils? You really need both! Both mediums have their own purpose and own unique results...both of which are beautiful! You can create a watercolor look with oil pastels, which we will share below, but you can also use oil pastels in so many different ways that just aren't feasible with watercolors. You can color with these directly on items using the chunky tip, or peel off the paper and use the whole side to cover large areas...like on a canvas (something you can do with watercolor too, but is so much easier with oil pastels.) PLUS, the Oil Pastels will offer a richer, much more pigmented color! You can dilute it to achieve a soft pastel, or leave as-is for a bolder, richer effect.
What surfaces can you use Oil Pastels on? We're so glad you asked! Of course the ideal medium would be a cold-pressed, watercolor paper which is created for oil pastels...and we just happen to have a whole new range of watercolor paper pads available in multiple sizes for you! Oil pastels do contain oil, so our watercolor papers are created to absorb that while providing the best surface for beautiful blending and brilliant results.
You can also try:
- black paper (just wait until you SEE the results!)
- canvas resist
- resist tags
- wood (just seal with matte or glossy gel when done)
- and so on!
Are you ready to see these babies in action now? We have two FULL tutorials for you so make sure you catch BOTH of them!
